Launch of Updated Severe Bleeding Disorder Alert Card by Minister of Health Leo Varadkar

Wed, 04 Feb 2015

The Minister for Health Mr. Leo Varadker launched the Updated the Severe Bleeding Disorder Alert Card today 4th, February, 2015 at 08.30am. The launch took place in the Irish Haemophila Society Offices, First Floor, Cathedral Court, New Street, Dubiln 8.
Updated Severe Bleeding Disorder Alert Cards are being issued to members of the Irish Haemophilia Society (IHS) with severe Haemophilia to assist hospital staff to ensure these patients get immediate appropriate treatment for their condition in hospital Emergency Departments.
The new cards will be issued by the three Specialist Treatment Centres for people with haemophilia.  The three centres are based in:
  • The National Centre for Hereditary Coagulation Disorders, St. James’s Hospital, James Street, Dublin 8.
  • Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin 12
  • Cork University Hospital, Wilton, Cork.

The card is designed to alert Emergency Department staff that if a person with haemophilia or a severe bleeding disorder attends an Emergency Department and shows this card staff should immediately phone the expert centre to get advice on appropriate treatment which should be given within 30 minutes.
This information is being distributed within the HSE so that medical, nursing and ambulance staff working within the acute hospitals are made aware that if a person with severe haemophilia attends at an Emergency Department, they may carry the card.
People with severe Haemophilia need to be triaged immediately and treated with factor concentrates for any bleeding episode without delay and each hospital in the State stocks an emergency supply of these medications.
To minimise the risk of delayed treatment the Irish Haemophilia Society (I H S) and the HSE are working together to ensure that staff in the hospital Emergency Departments are aware of the cards and the reason for them.
A joint initiative by the Irish Haemophilia Society, the National Haemophilia Council and the Specialist Treatment Centres supported by HSE.
